Alert for Parents: Urgent Recall on Kids' Mouthwash Due to Poisoning Risk – What You Need to Know

In a significant move to protect consumer safety, more than 100,000 bottles of kid’s mouthwash are being recalled across the United States due to an increased risk of poisoning. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an urgent recall notice for Heritage Store Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash, highlighting a critical lapse in child safety measures that could potentially endanger the lives of young children.

The Recall: A Closer Look at the Risks

The recall encompasses approximately 102,100 bottles of mouthwash, which were sold between October 2010 and December 2023. The primary concern arises from the mouthwash’s ethanol content, which necessitates child-safe packaging to prevent accidental ingestion by children.

However, the affected units failed to meet these standards, lacking the requisite child-resistant features mandated by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). This oversight significantly increases the risk of poisoning if the product is ingested by children.

Mouthwash: Identifying the Recalled Products

Heritage Store’s Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash, available in Wintermint and Eucalyptus Mint flavors, is at the center of this recall. These products are easily recognizable by their dark opaque brown bottles topped with a white lid and adorned with a pink and white label that features the Heritage Store logo, product name, and flavor.

Consumers who have purchased these mouthwash flavors within the specified period should immediately check their products for recall eligibility.

Distribution and Purchase Locations

The recalled mouthwash has been available at a wide array of retail locations, including Whole Foods, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, Mom’s Organic Market, New Season’s Market, and Mother’s Market & Kitchen.

Additionally, these products were sold online through Amazon, iHerb, HeritageStore.com, and other websites, retailing for around $10.50. This wide distribution underscores the potential reach and impact of this recall, affecting consumers nationwide.

What Consumers Should Do

The CPSC urges consumers in possession of the recalled mouthwash to immediately place it out of reach and sight of children, ensuring their safety until a proper disposal or return can be arranged.

The Nutraceutical Corporation, the manufacturer behind the recalled mouthwash, is offering affected customers a full refund or free replacement products. Consumers who haven’t been directly contacted by the company are encouraged to initiate contact to secure their compensation.

Recognizing Ethanol Poisoning

In light of this recall, parents and guardians must be vigilant for signs of ethanol poisoning, which may include vomiting, confusion, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, difficulty staying awake, and low body temperature.

If you suspect your child has ingested the mouthwash, immediate contact with poison control at 1-800-222-1222 or Poison.org is essential for guidance and support.
