T-Mobile Responds to Security Loopholes

SIM swap fraud has become a notorious method for criminals to gain unauthorized access to a person’s entire digital life, including financial accounts, email, and social media profiles.

By convincing or bribing a carrier’s employee to transfer a victim’s phone number to a new SIM card, hackers can bypass security measures that rely on text message verification.

Acknowledging the severity of this issue, T-Mobile has announced the implementation of a new internal protocol called the “Account Change Engine” (ACE). This system is designed to meticulously assess SIM change requests to determine their legitimacy before approval.

How Does the Account Change Engine Work?

The ACE system introduces a significant shift in how SIM swap requests are processed. Under the previous system, a SIM change request sent via SMS needed to be responded to within 10 minutes; otherwise, the change was automatically authorized.

The new ACE framework requires explicit customer confirmation for such changes. If the system flags a request as suspicious, the customer will need to confirm the request via a secure method to ensure that it is legitimate.

To accommodate customers who legitimately need to change their SIM due to reasons like a lost or stolen phone, T-Mobile has outlined procedures to verify identity securely. For those with multiple lines on the same account, another line can be used for verification.

Customers who do not have this option must visit a T-Mobile store with their ID to process their request, adding a layer of in-person verification that strengthens security further.
