Elon Musk’s announcement came in response to a query from a user on X, shedding light on the company’s strategy to combat the pervasive issue of fake accounts. Elon Musk tweeted, “Unfortunately, a small fee for new user write access is the only way to curb the relentless onslaught of bots.”
He further explained that artificial intelligence and troll farms have become adept at circumventing traditional security measures designed to detect them, stating, “Current AI (and troll farms) can pass ‘Are you a bot’ with ease.”

The X platform has been facing significant challenges with spam and malicious bot activities, which not only degrade the user experience but also consume valuable digital real estate, occupying many desirable usernames.
In his online discussion, Elon Musk highlighted that the onslaught of fake accounts also monopolizes the available namespace, leaving many sought-after handles taken.

Under the new policy, which is still under consideration, new accounts will be required to pay a “small annual fee” to post, like, bookmark, and reply.
This fee is designed to reduce spam and create a more enjoyable environment for all users. However, the following accounts will remain free, ensuring that new users can still engage with content without immediate financial commitment.
Highlighting a user-focused approach, Elon Musk assured that the fee targets only new users. He clarified that after a probationary period of three months, these users would regain free write access, suggesting a tiered approach to user integration and platform security.

This isn’t the first time X has implemented measures to manage its user base and enhance security. Just last year, new unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines were introduced to a nominal fee of $1 per year.
