Cheese Recall Alert: Schnucks Pulls Spreads Over Salmonella Fears

In a significant public health move, Schnucks has issued a voluntary recall of three popular cheese spreads, warning that they might be contaminated with salmonella. The company revealed on Saturday that their Whip Cream Spread, Strawberry Spread, and Cream Cheese Spread are potentially affected, and urges consumers to return these products immediately.

Customers are advised to verify their purchases by checking the UPC numbers:

  • Schnucks Whip Cream Spread: UPC number 4131858005, best by date 8/8/2024.
  • Schnucks Strawberry Spread: UPC number 4131858007, best by date 9/8/2024.
  • Schnucks Cream Cheese Spread: UPC number 4131858023, best by date 10/8/2024.

Understanding Salmonella Risks

Salmonella contamination can lead to salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) notes that symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever may emerge within 6 hours to 6 days of consuming tainted food. While most individuals recover in a few days, those at higher risk include infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that salmonella is responsible for around 1.35 million infections and 26,500 hospitalizations each year in the U.S., with about 420 related deaths. Consumers are encouraged to contact healthcare providers if they suspect exposure to a contaminated product.

This cheese spread recall is just one of over 25 food-related recalls announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month. In a related incident in late April, a salmonella outbreak prompted Trader Joe’s to pull herb packets linked to infections and hospitalizations.

Stay informed about recalls to protect yourself and your loved ones. Check your pantry and return these spreads if you have them to avoid potential illness.
