Trader Joe’s Recalls Basil After Salmonella Scare What Shoppers Need to Know

Trader Joe’s, a popular grocery retailer known for its wide range of organic and specialty products, has issued a recall for its Infinite Herbs Organic Basil due to potential contamination with Salmonella. This precautionary measure follows reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which have linked a dozen cases of Salmonella infection across seven U.S. states to the product.

Immediate Action to Protect Consumers

The recalled product, packaged in 2.5-ounce containers, was sold in various states primarily in the New England and eastern regions of the United States. According to Trader Joe’s, the potentially affected basil was available for purchase from February 1 through April 6. The company has advised consumers who bought the basil during this period to either dispose of it immediately or return it to any Trader Joe’s store for a full refund.

In a move to ensure customer safety, Trader Joe’s has voluntarily removed the implicated basil from shelves across numerous states including Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, and many others, effectively covering much of the eastern and central parts of the country.

Details of the Outbreak and Ongoing Investigation

The outbreak, identified as being caused by Salmonella Typhimurium, has notably affected individuals in Florida and Minnesota, with several cases also reported in New Jersey, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Georgia. The latest instance of Salmonella infection was reported as recently as April 2.

The CDC and FDA are actively investigating the outbreak to pinpoint the exact source of the contamination. Initial traces have led back to the supplier, Infinite Herbs, LLC, based in Miami. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine if additional products might be affected.

Understanding Salmonella and Its Impact

Salmonella infections typically manifest symptoms between six hours and six days after exposure and can last from four to seven days. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, which can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or headaches.

The CDC emphasizes the importance of medical attention for those exhibiting symptoms, particularly for individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and infants, as the infection can pose severe health risks. Advisories suggest seeking medical help if symptoms escalate, such as a fever above 102°F, diarrhea persisting for more than three days, or prolonged vomiting.

As the situation develops, Trader Joe’s commits to keeping the public informed and prioritizing consumer safety above all. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in the handling and distribution of food products.
