5 Cool Features We're Hoping to See in Android 15 From Widgets on Lock Screens to Dual Apps2

With the transformative updates seen in Android 12 and 13, expectations are high for what Android 15 might offer in 2024. As Android continues to evolve, each new version brings with it a host of exciting features and improvements that significantly enhance user experience.

Here’s a deep dive into five features we hope to see in the next major iteration of Google’s OS, each aimed at elevating the Android ecosystem to new heights.

Is Android 15 Releasing With Futuristic Features? Insider Story Discussed
Dreaming of dual apps: The potential of cloned apps in Android 15.

Android 15: A Step Towards a More Interactive Experience

Widgets have been a staple of Android’s versatility, offering at-a-glance information and quick interactions right from the home screen. Yet, when it comes to lock screen customization, Android has lagged behind its counterparts. Inspired by Apple’s implementation in iOS and NothingOS 2.5’s lock screen widgets, it’s high time Google introduced this functionality to Android.

Imagine a lock screen where you could interact with widgets like the Battery widget for connected Google devices, a weather widget, Gmail, Google Keep, Fitbit, and even a YouTube Music widget, transforming the lock screen into a more useful and engaging part of your device.

The Introduction of Cloned Apps: For Those Juggling Multiple Accounts

The concept of running multiple instances of the same app isn’t new, with several Android skins like MIUI (now HyperOS) and One UI offering this feature for years. However, Google has yet to implement native app cloning in Android. This feature would be especially useful for social media and messaging apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp, allowing users to maintain separate accounts for work and personal use without the hassle of logging in and out.

While there were hints of a “Cloned apps” feature in Android 14’s beta stages, it’s yet to materialize. With rumors of a “Private Space” feature on the horizon, we’re hopeful that Android 15 might finally introduce app cloning.

5 Cool Features We're Hoping to See in Android 15 From Widgets on Lock Screens to Dual Apps
Transforming smartphones into desktops: The promise of Android 15’s desktop mode.

A Revolutionary Desktop Mode: Transforming Phones into PCs

With the Pixel 8 series introducing a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port capable of display output, the potential for a desktop mode becomes even more enticing. Such a feature would allow users to connect their phone to a monitor and use it as a computer, a la Samsung DeX.

This could revolutionize the way we think about mobile computing, blurring the lines between smartphones and desktop PCs. Whether it mirrors the current Android UI for tablets or takes inspiration from ChromeOS, a dedicated desktop mode in Android 15 could redefine productivity on the go.

With Android 15 Beta 1 expected soon and rumors of iOS 18 from Apple.

Screen Off Gestures: For Seamless Interactions

OnePlus was among the first to introduce screen-off gestures, allowing users to perform actions without waking their devices. From controlling music playback to launching apps or toggling the flashlight, these gestures add a layer of convenience that’s hard to overlook.

With Android 15, Google has the opportunity to integrate such functionality natively, offering users a more intuitive way to interact with their devices without having to turn the screen on.

Bard Integration in Gboard: AI-Powered Typing Assistance

As Google pushes its AI technology forward with Bard (recently rebranded from Assistant with Bard or Gemini), integrating this AI into Gboard could significantly enhance the Android typing experience.

Beyond mere typing assistance, Bard could offer contextually relevant suggestions, create custom stickers and emojis, and even summarize messages, making communication on Android devices not just faster but smarter.

As we look forward to Android 15, it’s clear that the potential for innovation and improvement is boundless. From making our lock screens more interactive to transforming our phones into desktop computers, the features we’re hoping to see could dramatically change how we use our Android devices.

With Google’s track record of pushing the envelope with each new Android version, there’s every reason to be excited about what Android 15 will bring to the table.
