Mini Bagels: Unexpected Gluten Discovery in Gluten-Free Products

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of the Feel Good Foods brand’s gluten-free stuffed mini bagels, specifically the Plain flavored and Everything flavored Cream Cheese Stuffed Mini Bagels.

These products, which were intended to be safe for consumers with gluten intolerances, have been found to possibly contain gluten, prompting an urgent recall from the market.

Consumers are advised to check their freezers for these products immediately, especially if they have gluten allergies or sensitivities. The products in question have the UPC numbers 89903900283 for the plain flavor and 89903900286 for the everything flavor, with a “best by” date ranging from May 29, 2024, to September 17, 2025.

Health Risks and Immediate Action

The recall was initiated following a consumer report of an adverse reaction to gluten after consuming these mini bagels. For individuals with gluten or wheat allergies, consuming these products may pose a significant health risk, including the possibility of an anaphylactic reaction.

Symptoms of such severe allergic reactions can include hives, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and, in critical cases, throat tightness and breathing difficulties.

For those possessing any of the recalled items, it is advised to either dispose of the product immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. This action is crucial to prevent any potential health risks.

Safety Warning: Gluten in Bagels

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous quality control in food production, especially when it comes to allergens. Consumers rely on labeling to make safe dietary choices, particularly those with health conditions that restrict certain food ingredients.

The presence of gluten in products labeled gluten-free not only undermines consumer trust but also exposes individuals to potential harm, making strict adherence to food safety protocols all the more essential.
