Colorado Woman Wins $8,500,000 Settlement After Scary Police SUV Train Collision While Handcuffed

Local authorities in Colorado have reached a substantial settlement following a harrowing incident where Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, a suspect in a road rage incident, was left handcuffed in a police SUV that was subsequently struck by a freight train. The city of Fort Lupton and the town of Platteville will each bear half of the $8.5 million settlement, to be paid by their insurers. This agreement comes after Rios-Gonzalez sustained serious injuries, including nine broken ribs and a broken arm, during the September 16, 2022, collision.

Details of the Settlement

The settlement was described as a voluntary agreement that acknowledges the severity of the incident and allows all parties involved to move forward. “This voluntary settlement is to the mutual satisfaction of the parties, recognizes the gravity of this matter, and allows all parties to move forward,” stated a release from the Fort Lupton Police Department. The legal resolution also reflects an effort to close a distressing chapter for the community and the victim.

The Incident and Legal Consequences

The incident occurred when Fort Lupton police officer Jordan Steinke, during a multi-officer traffic stop, placed Rios-Gonzalez in a cruiser parked on a railroad crossing. Despite her screams for help, captured on body and dash cameras, a train collided with the vehicle, causing her severe injuries. Steinke was later convicted of reckless endangerment and third-degree assault, resulting in a sentence of 30 months of supervised probation and 100 hours of public service. During her trial, Steinke testified that she was distracted by the situation’s urgency and failed to notice the location of the railroad tracks.

Official Responses and Future Implications

This case has sparked discussions about police practices and the safety measures needed during arrests. CNN has reached out to the Town of Platteville and Rios’s attorney for further comments on the settlement. Meanwhile, the Fort Lupton community, located about 30 miles north of Denver, is grappling with the repercussions of this event and looking towards enhancing safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.

The settlement not only compensates Rios-Gonzalez for her physical and emotional suffering but also serves as a reminder of the crucial need for vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines by law enforcement officials. As communities across the nation watch, the outcomes of this case could influence future policies on law enforcement conduct and suspect handling.
