New iPhone Update Rolls Out Discover How iOS 18.1 Lets You Record Calls and More on Your iPhone 15 and 16

Apple’s latest software update, iOS 18.1, launched on October 28, enhancing iPhone functionalities with its innovative features and essential security patches. Tailored for newer models such as the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and the entire iPhone 16 lineup, the update extends beyond the boundaries of the EU and China, making advanced capabilities accessible to a broader audience.

Call Recording Arrives on iPhones

Among the most anticipated features is the new ability to record phone calls directly from your iPhone. Users will notice a sound bar icon at the top left of the screen during a call; tapping this will initiate recording. “Once you start recording a call, an automated voice will announce to both parties that the recording has commenced after a three-second delay,” ensures user consent and awareness in the process. Recorded calls are then saved in the Notes app, where they can be replayed. Notably, iPhones starting from the iPhone 14 Pro model also support call transcript viewing directly within Notes, although this feature is not available on older models like the iPhone XR.

Legal Considerations and Privacy

It’s important for users to consider the legal implications of call recording. Before using this feature, checking with local law enforcement or legal counsel about the legality of call recording in your area is advised, as laws vary significantly by region.

Enhanced Apple Intelligence

The update doesn’t stop at call recording. It also introduces a suite of Apple Intelligence features aimed at optimizing the iPhone experience. These features include advanced writing tools for emails, a Clean Up photo tool to remove distractions from images, and an upgraded Siri that now allows for more natural interactions. However, access to these advanced tools requires joining the Apple Intelligence waitlist via the settings menu.

More Than Just Intelligent Writing

“Writing Tools are available nearly everywhere you type, allowing you to rewrite, proofread and summarize text right in the app you’re working in,” states Apple’s release notes. This indicates a significant leap towards a more intuitive and helpful user interface that aids in creating polished, professional communications more effortlessly.

Revamped Control Center and RCS Messaging

iOS 18.1 also refines the iPhone’s Control Center, making adjustments to the layout and adding the capability to manage Wi-Fi, VPN, AirDrop, and Satellite settings independently. These changes are designed to enhance user convenience and control, providing a more tailored and efficient interface.

In addition to interface tweaks, the update broadens the scope of RCS messaging support. This expansion includes Messages for Business, which was previously limited to iMessage. This enhancement could facilitate smoother communication between businesses and customers, leveraging RCS’s rich communication features.
