Huge Recall Alert Why Your Kia Telluride Might Start Rolling Away Unexpectedly

In a significant move that underscores the paramount importance of vehicle safety, Kia has announced a substantial recall affecting over 427,000 of its vehicles. This precautionary measure, stemming from a potentially hazardous defect, specifically targets the Kia Telluride, one of the marque’s top-selling models. The recall spans models produced between 2020 and 2024, in response to issues that pose a dangerous risk to occupants and bystanders alike.

A Closer Look at the Rollaway Hazard

The recall was prompted by a series of alarming reports indicating that the Kia Telluride exhibited tendencies to move unintentionally, even when the vehicle was placed in the park. Owners detailed frightening experiences of their vehicles rolling away, coupled with disturbing noises, vibrations, and a troubling resistance to gear shifts.

These complaints caught the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), leading to a collaborative investigation with Kia’s North American Safety Office.

The probe unearthed that an assembly oversight was at the heart of the problem. Specifically, the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft were found to be misaligned. This misalignment prevented the parts from fully engaging, causing them to wear down prematurely and, most critically, leading to unanticipated vehicle movement.

Kia’s Response to the Recall

Kia has been forthright about the issue, acknowledging 16 reports of unintended movement, including warranty claims and direct complaints from concerned owners. In response, the automaker has developed a remedy that involves updating the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) software.

This update ensures the parking brake automatically engages under specific conditions, such as when the gear shifter is in the ‘P’ (Park) position and the engine is turned off, or when the vehicle is stopped and the driver’s door opens. This intervention is designed to mitigate the risk of the vehicle rolling away, addressing the safety concerns head-on.

Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to receive a notification by mail, instructing them to bring their Telluride SUVs to authorized service centers for the necessary software update. This service, aimed at reinforcing the safety and reliability of the Kia Telluride, will be provided at no cost to the owners.

By taking proactive steps to have their vehicles inspected and updated, owners can ensure the safety of their vehicles, their passengers, and themselves.

For Kia, this recall is a testament to their commitment to upholding safety standards and protecting their customers. As the situation develops, it will be essential for all affected owners to participate in the recall, reinforcing the collective responsibility of manufacturers and vehicle owners to maintain road safety.
