Breaking News: Ford Calls Back 2 Million SUVs Over Flying Trim Risk - What Owners Need to Know

In an unprecedented move that underscores the automotive giant’s commitment to road safety, Ford has initiated a massive recall affecting nearly 2 million Explorer SUVs. Spanning models from 2011 to 2019, this recall is among the largest vehicle recalls in the United States for the year 2024. At the heart of the issue is an exterior clip responsible for securing the windshield trim, which has been found to detach during driving, posing a significant hazard.

The Hazard at Hand

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has brought to light that a defect in 1,889,110 vehicles could lead to the trim coming loose and flying off. This not only creates a road hazard but significantly increases the risk of a crash.

The concern over these potentially dangerous detachments has prompted a thorough investigation, revealing a substantial number of complaints and warranty reports. As of January 12, Ford was made aware of 568 online complaints, alongside more than 14,000 warranty reports, indicating the severity and widespread nature of the issue.

A Timeline of Discovery and Action

Ford’s journey to this recall began as early as 2018, with both the NHTSA and the brand delving into the complaints. Initially, it assessed the risk as minimal, citing the low mass of the parts.

However, a shift in perspective occurred last year when the NHTSA launched a preliminary investigation, deeming the detaching part a significant hazard. After a series of discussions throughout the fall, the company agreed to the recall, showcasing a proactive stance in addressing safety concerns.

Despite the alarming potential for danger, Ford has reassured the public, stating that there have been no reported crashes or injuries linked to this issue. The company estimates that only about 5% of the recalled vehicles will need a trim replacement.

Vehicle owners are advised to look out for signs such as gaps around the A-pillar trim or unusual wind noise, which could indicate a loose trim piece.

Ford emphasizes the importance of contacting dealerships for inspections and repairs, promising comprehensive support, including mobile repair services and vehicle pick-up and delivery at participating dealers.

Ford’s Proactive Safety Measures

This recall is part of a broader strategy by Ford to prioritize customer safety and prevent potential issues before they arise. Last year, Ford led the automotive industry in the number of recalls, a testament to its rigorous safety protocols.

This proactive approach is echoed in Ford’s statement to Motor1, where the company highlighted recalls as a key method of safeguarding customers.

Industry-Wide Attention on Vehicle Safety

Ford’s recall coincides with another major recall by Kia, covering over 100,000 vehicles due to concerns about roof molding detachment. These back-to-back recalls serve as a critical reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and manufacturer vigilance in ensuring road safety.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the commitment of companies like Ford to address safety concerns head-on is vital. This recall not only emphasizes the significance of maintaining strict safety standards but also reassures consumers of Ford’s dedication to their well-being on the road.
