Apple May Drop Future Vision Pro Model as Sales Plummet Is This the End for the High-Priced Headset

In a shocking turn of events for one of the tech industry’s giants, Apple’s latest product, the Apple Vision Pro headset, is facing drastically reduced production numbers and a potentially scrapped future model. This comes after initial high hopes and substantial investment into what was once seen as a pioneering step forward in wearable technology.

Apple Vision Pro: A Sudden Decline in Demand

Apple Vision Pro, a $3,500 headset that emerged from an extensive eight-year development process involving billions of dollars, initially saw robust pre-order sales ranging between 160,000 to 180,000 units during its launch weekend in January.

However, the situation has taken a dramatic turn. Recent reports suggest a severe drop in interest, with Apple Stores now moving only a few units weekly and experiencing a significant decrease in in-store demo bookings.

Famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shed light on the severity of the situation, noting that Apple has halved its shipping forecast for the year, reducing it to just 400,000 to 450,000 units from an initial 800,000. Kuo highlights a particularly stark decline in demand within the U.S., prompting Apple to reconsider its plans for international release.

Adjustments on the Horizon

The ramifications of the faltering demand are evident in Apple’s strategy adjustments. Initially, there was anticipation surrounding a lighter, more affordable version of the Apple Vision Pro slated for release in the latter half of the next year.

However, Kuo’s insights suggest that these plans are being drastically scaled back if not entirely shelved. Furthermore, Apple anticipates a continued decline in year-on-year shipments for the Apple Vision Pro into 2025.

Niche Market Woes

Despite being lauded as a technological marvel equipped with a cutting-edge micro-OLED display and an intuitive interface, the Apple Vision Pro struggles to justify its hefty price tag without a “killer app” that would broaden its appeal beyond the hardcore Apple aficionados.

The device’s shift towards enterprise application highlights its niche market positioning, which may not be enough to sustain long-term success.

The Emergence of “Appleholes”

In a somewhat humorous twist to the Apple Vision Pro’s market challenges, social media has coined the term “Appleholes” for users wearing the headset in inappropriate situations, such as while driving—highlighting the societal impact and the mixed public reception of high-tech wearables.

Looking Ahead: Apple’s Next Moves

As Apple navigates this unexpected setback, industry watchers and consumers alike are keenly observing how the company will adjust its strategy in response to the Apple Vision Pro’s lukewarm market reception.

The coming months will be crucial for Apple as it decides whether to continue investing in this high-stakes project or cut its losses and shift focus towards more promising ventures.
