Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and Mac Are Getting a Massive Makeover – Biggest Software Redesign in a Decade Coming Soon

In what is being reported as one of the most significant transformations in its history, Apple is set to overhaul the operating systems for its mainstay devices: the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This ambitious redesign, anticipated to be unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, will introduce a new look and feel across iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and MacOS 16. Sources suggest that this update could be the most drastic change since the iOS 7 in 2013 and the MacOS Big Sur in 2020.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac are getting a major software overhaul—here’s what to expect.

A Unified, Sleeker User Experience

Drawing inspiration from the interface of Apple’s Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, the upcoming software updates are expected to feature more rounded icons, sleeker windows, and an enhanced focus on depth and shadows. This shift is not just about aesthetics but also aims to simplify how users interact with their devices, ensuring a more intuitive and streamlined experience. The redesign strives for a cohesive appearance across all platforms, addressing current inconsistencies in app and icon designs on different devices.

Bridging Platforms with Vision Pro

The Vision Pro, launched in 2023, received a lukewarm reception but introduced a design philosophy that appears to be influencing the next wave of software updates. With VisionOS, Apple emphasized a modern, depth-focused interface, which seems to be the cornerstone for the new iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS designs. Despite the mixed feedback on the headset, its interface design elements are poised to shape the future of Apple’s mainstream software products.

Analyst Perspectives

Jitesh Ubrani from IDC highlighted the potential impact of these changes, particularly for iPadOS. “If Apple is able to redesign the iPadOS significantly, it could potentially improve uptake of the product,” he remarked. However, Ubrani noted that while these changes are crucial for modernizing the look and feel of the operating systems, they might not directly drive sales. Instead, the emphasis is on enhancing user satisfaction and providing a seamless experience across all platforms.

Challenges and Market Dynamics

This redesign comes at a critical time for Apple, following a slight decline in iPhone sales and challenges in rolling out new AI features like an advanced Siri. These software updates could redirect focus from Apple’s AI pursuits and rejuvenate interest in its core products.

Apple’s commitment to reinvigorate its software aesthetics and usability could mark a new era for its devices, potentially attracting both new customers and pleasing long-time users. As June approaches, both developers and consumers eagerly anticipate what could be the most extensive overhaul of Apple’s operating system environment in nearly a decade.
