Say Goodbye to Old Tech: Netflix Cuts Off Streaming on Early Apple TV Models

As streaming technology continues to advance, staying current is more than a luxury; it’s a necessity for accessing the latest features and maintaining security. In a move that underlines this reality, Netflix has announced it will discontinue support for second- and third-generation Apple TVs after July 31st. This decision marks the end of an era for devices that first appeared over a decade ago, pushing users towards more modern solutions.

Out with the Old: Why Netflix is Moving On

Company’s decision to phase out older Apple TVs didn’t come as a surprise to those following the trends in tech. The streaming giant has a history of retiring support for aging devices to maintain a high-quality viewer experience. “The company is committed to maintaining the best possible Netflix experience,”  platform’s spokesperson explained in a recent email to customers. This move follows similar updates in 2019 when Netflix ended support for certain older Samsung and Vizio smart TVs and first-generation Roku boxes, due to a shift from Windows Media DRM to Microsoft’s PlayReady DRM.

The first three generations of Apple TVs have been labeled “obsolete” by Apple itself, which typically ends service for hardware seven years after stopping sales. These older models, lacking access to Apple’s App Store, highlight the limitations in functionality compared to newer versions.

Second and third generation models of Apple TV devices will not be able to support Netflix after July 31.

Security at the Forefront of Netflix’s Decision

Security concerns are at the core of Netflix’s decision to retire these older models. “From time to time, Company retires support for older devices to ensure our security commitment to our members,” said Kumiko Hidaka, Platform’s communications director, emphasizing the importance of protecting user data in an era where digital security threats are increasingly sophisticated.

What This Means for Consumers

For users of the second and third-generation Apple TVs, this change means it’s time to consider an upgrade if they wish to continue enjoying their Netflix binge-watching sessions without interruption. Fortunately, there are enticing deals available, like Verizon’s current offer of a $40 discount on the latest Apple TV 4K, making the transition to newer technology both appealing and affordable.

This update serves as a reminder of the relentless pace of technological advancement and the necessity for consumers to keep up to ensure access to the best features and enhancements in entertainment technology. For  users, the future beckons with the promise of better performance, enhanced security, and a richer viewing experience.
