Ford Recalls Maverick Hybrids Over Safety Glitch: What Owners Need to Know

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for 8,727 of its Maverick hybrid pickups due to a critical software issue that could unexpectedly shift vehicles into neutral, posing a significant risk of accidents. This recent callback adds to a series of challenges Ford has faced with its hybrid models, particularly the popular Maverick introduced in the 2022 model year.

The crux of the problem lies in a software error within the hybrid powertrain control module (HPCM), which may erroneously cause the vehicle to shift into neutral without warning. This fault disrupts the driver’s ability to maintain control over the vehicle’s drive power, markedly increasing the risk of a crash. The issue affects a range of Maverick hybrids from the 2022 to 2024 model years.

In response to this issue, Ford has not only targeted the Maverick hybrids but also announced similar recalls for a select number of Ford Escapes (2020 to 2022 models) and Lincoln Corsairs (2021 to 2022 models), which are experiencing the same software malfunction.

Ford’s Remedial Actions and Customer Guidance

To address the malfunction, Ford dealerships will update the HPCM software at no cost to the vehicle owners. Ford plans to begin notifying affected Maverick hybrid owners with recall letters, which are expected to be dispatched by May 23.

Owners of the vehicles impacted by this recall are encouraged to reach out to Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for more information and assistance. Ford’s reference number for this recall is 24S33, which owners can cite for quicker service resolution.

Broader Impact and Previous Recalls

This incident marks the second recall issued for the Maverick model in May alone. Earlier in the month, Ford had to recall 242,669 Mavericks from the 2022 to 2024 model years due to issues with the body control module (BCM), which could inadvertently deactivate one or both of the vehicle’s rear tail lights—another serious safety hazard.

Moreover, in March, an additional 62,813 Maverick hybrids were recalled because of concerns that the instrument panel cluster might fail to properly illuminate warning lights or gauges, potentially preventing drivers from being alerted to various vehicle malfunctions.

Looking Ahead: Ford’s Commitment to Safety and Reliability

As Ford continues to navigate these challenges, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to safety and customer satisfaction. These recalls underscore Ford’s proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues that could impact the safety of its vehicles and drivers. By addressing these issues head-on and offering no-cost repairs, Ford aims to maintain trust and ensure the reliability of its vehicles, especially as it further expands its footprint in the hybrid and electric vehicle market.
